Initial selection
Following our inclusion in last year’s Animal Logo, a wee selection of our branding work has been featured in Counterprint’s latest publication, Monogram Logo, including two brands that I named. Which is rather nice indeed. Why not buy the set for someone that you love?
My mum-in-law owns Herman Brown, one of the finest vintage clothing shops in the world. Together with her daughter/my wife, I curate a collection called HB Electronics (my wife wanted it to sound like a provincial fancy goods shop that might be closed on Wednesday afternoons). As well as undertaking all the buying and merchandising, we handle our own press and marketing. To publicise our Tumblr site we mailed out blank floppy discs to some very confused fashion editors.
It’s not all obscure time signatures and weirdo artists round here. Sometimes I work for doctors, dentists and architects – lawyers even. Case in point: Simpson and Marwick entrusted me to give their tone of voice a once-over as part of a brand development package. Could come in handy when the feds finally catch up with me (I’m joking, mum).
Copy and art direction for Inclusive Play who make playground equipment for kids of all abilities. The Playmobil-esque figures were drawn by Robert Hanson whose illustrations have graced the pages of Monocle, the New York Times and the Guardian (see more below). If only all play parks were this awesome.
Here is where is a collaborative project by 7VWWVW and Wounded Knee. Inspired by a mutual love of Scots naturalist, Tom Weir, we devised a soundtrack to celebrate his life and work, accompanied by our own specially edited collection of footage from Weir’s Way. Originally commissioned by Glasgow’s Market Gallery in 2010, this has subsequently been performed at the CCA, Glasgow, Stills Gallery, Edinburgh and as part of Atlas Art’s Panorama festival on the Isle of Skye.
Skilled illustrator (skillistrator?) Damien Weighill has a natty new website, featuring (among many other wonderful things) our collaborative project for Pizzaluxe. Extra style points to anyone that spotted the DFL reference in the above header.
Some years ago, when I co-ran a shop/exhibition space called Pageant, we’d ask local hoodlums to model in exchange for peanuts and free clobber. One of the aforementioned volunteers, Kieron Forbes, has since started his own skate brand, Harvest. With a tight-knit team of local skaters, not to mention the graphic talents of Matthew Swan and Jamie Johnson, they are ones to watch.
Last year I played in Sarah Kenchington’s ingenious Edinburgh Art Festival commission, Wind Pipes for Edinburgh, playing a piece composed by Daniel Padden. I have long since given up imploring friends to attend my shows but this one turned out to be – if I may be so bold – a ‘festival must-see’. I hope Sarah, Daniel and our merry crew can revisit this one soon.
Our campaign work for Edinburgh International Festival made it on to the Cool Brands list a while back. Whatever that actually means. Although surely if one acknowledges that something is cool then it instantly becomes uncool, thus rendering the cool list invalid. And therefore this blog post. Or something. I don’t understand the world any more.
