Charitable status

A sneaky cheeky peek of some work for Capability Scotland, for whom we have recently created a new brand identity, copy and guidelines for volunteers. With our help, the organisation is applying this new look in charity shops, schools and day centres across Scotland. Clever stuff.

Work related

There is a whole heap of new and notable work up on the Touch site, including a case study of the inaugural publication we created for the financial high-flyers at Majedie Asset Management. That’s a hand-cut paper pine cone from the cover, by the way. Talk about making things nice and easy.

Mood enhancer

Some new-new up on the Herman Brown/HB inspiration site. You won’t find too many images of clothes because, let’s face it, they aren’t that interesting. (I’m genuinely sorry if I didn’t credit your picture. The majority of these images were ‘curated’ from the perpetual tail-eating-snake that is Tumblr.)

Just landed

Presenting the website for Herringbone, throughout which you will discover my copy, art direction and alarmingly hairy hands. Nattily designed by Chris Logan with photography from David Anderson (who kindly roped in some charming friends and family as models) and a lovely spot of illustration by Heather Gatley.

Tomorrow people

I am most pleased with this recent collaboration with illustrator Dominic Kesterton and designer Orlando Lloyd at Workhorse Press, executed in a fetching 1 colour Risograph print. Interesting fact: the copy came to me in a particularly vivid dream about a dystopian nether-future. Too much cheese I’ll wager.

Brand analysis

Rich Baird over at Brand, Packaging and Opinion has featured the work of Touch a few times over the years and he is always on the money when it comes to casting a critical eye over identity projects. Worth bookmarking if you like that sort of a thing, which let’s face it if you have read this far you probably do. (Photo by Matt Davis so don’t even think about it.)

Map makers

I was delighted to learn that Herman Brown is one of only a handful of independent shops to be included in the recently published Herb Lester Guide to Edinburgh. With Dick’s and Analogue also getting a shout out we’re in pretty good company. Available at all three shops soon or direct from the well travelled types at Herb Lester.

Bread winner

I bet you didn’t know there were so many regional variations for the names of sub sandwiches. Me neither to be honest until I did this as part of a recent brand project. My food based scribblings were brought to life by type whizz Alex Fowkes and my talented associate Chris Logan who pulled the whole shebang together.

Go Yoko

Get to know the wearable art/arty wearables from Yokollection, aka Francesca Nobilucci and Alexa Hare, who produce super limited runs of printed scarves with an eye-searingly rad post digital sensibility. Like the source of the internet itself, these are quite literally shrouded in mystery. I spy a collaboration…

Pretty handy

My friends (and fellow seaside dwellers) Russell Ferguson and Julie Nicoll are some multitalented types. Not only do they run the finest art and design bookshop there is – thus keeping me in fancy magazines – but they also turn their hands to making desirable objects. One of those inlaid cruiser decks would make an old man very happy indeed…
